What is Paper Piecing? Paper piecing in quilting refers to two distinct methods of using paper to stabilize fabric while sewing quilt tops. Paper piecing is used to create intricate designs that could not otherwise be readily sewn, due to the fragility, small size, or geometric shapes of the fabric pieces being sewn.
I have been wanting for a while now to take a paper piecing class, but for one reason or another I've always missed this class. I was so excited this weekend to spend time at Red Hen Fabrics in Marietta, GA with David Gilleland of Vector Quilts. David is an expert in paper piecing and we purchased his Star Voyage Pattern to begin putting together a 40 x 40 quilt. Saturday we learned the basics of putting it together and I can tell you it is very precise. What I found was that it is so relaxing. It takes you into a whole new dimension because your thoughts are on the intricate detailing of paper piecing these blocks and points. I'm so excited to see the finished project. Each day, I will be taking a portion of the blocks and putting them together until I am complete. David is a very easy going guy with a wonderful personality to match. Try paper piecing and see how easy and calming it can be and create some beautiful quilts
